Growing the Next Generation of Leaders Panel a Big Hit

By Uncategorized

right side_chenLuceyVCS kicked off the Christmas month with a dynamic community discussion on leadership. Elected officials, educators, parents and the senior class met in the WAPAC on December 1, 2015, to examine the importance of civic engagement and its relationship to the development of future leaders.

The event was the first in the new VCS Community and Education Series – a program designed to create a better bond between VCS and the broader Tri-Valley.  By design, VCS and Tri-Valley families gather to address the pertinent education and community issues of the day.

In its first outing, about 150 people gathered to hear a panel that included: Catharine Baker, CA State Assembly, 16th District, Dr. Michael Chen, Superintendent of Valley Christian Schools, David Haubert, Mayor of Dublin, Marilyn Lucey, M.ED., President of the San Ramon Valley Council of PTAs, Jamie Westgate, Principal at San Ramon Valley Christian Academy, and Abram Wilson, Former Mayor of San Ramon.

The big takeaways – research says that students who participate in mandatory community engagement are 22% more likely to graduate from college; Assemblywoman Baker challenged the senior class to find ways to respectfully disagree as they travel through life; and Taylor Valci encouraged the panel to get with the times and recognize that students today don’t live their lives in the same way the plus 40 panelists did.
